Live the Raramuri Culture in Chihuahua
5/11In the state of Chihuahua, Creel is the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara; this place is the gateway to a garden of natural beauties, among forests, rocks, caves, the spectacular Copper Canyon, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, in addition to the missions and traditions of the Tarahumara or Rarmuri culture. It is also the passage of the Chihuahua Pacfico train, better known as Chepe.
Creel is located 247 kilometers southeast of the city of Chihuahua, on the upper reaches of the Sierra Madre Occidental, known as the Sierra Tarahumara. If you want to immerse in the Rarmuri culture, you can visit San Ignacio Arareko. At 8 kilometers from Creel is the nearest Rarmuri town.
The most traditional Rarmuri craft is basketry, especially wares -baskets woven with palmillas. But recently, Rarmuris have dabbled with great expertise in carved wood products, decorative objects and furniture; clay objects and wool articles. You can find these pieces in the Museum or House of Handicrafts. Counseled by Italian schools, the Rarmuri also begin to produce violins of extraordinary quality.
