This isn't the only holiday market in New York City, but it's definitely one of the most popular. Featuring more than 70 stalls, all manned by local craftspeople, artists and food providers, the Union Square Holiday Market is the perfect place to do a spot of Christmas shopping. There are also regular live music performances to keep the atmosphere jolly.

December 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th 2018

Heading into its almost 60th year, the historic annual Georgetown Christmas market sees the downtown area transform into an old-time mountain Christmas scene. There's horse-drawn wagon rides, Victorian carolers, a European marketplace and the cutest children's Santa Lucia procession you will ever see.

November 22nd - December 24th 2018

The Christmas Village, located in LOVE Park, aims to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional European Christmas market. There are over 80 different vendors selling European-style food (think bratwursts, Belgian waffles and gluhwein), as well as gifts and ornaments from around the world.

November 23rd - December 30th 2018

Although a newer and perhaps more extravagant market than some of the others on this list, 'Enchant' is magical nonetheless. Located at Safeco Field, it features one of the world's largest Christmas light mazes, an ice skating rink, a chance to visit Santa and Mrs Claus, as well as many gift stalls and food vendors.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to step back in time to visit Victorian England, then wonder no more. This themed Christmas fair features lamp-lit winding lanes, shops, pubs, parties and real-life Dickensian characters that recreate this magical era.

The Denver Christkindl Market is as close to a German Christmas experience as you can get. It features German food, beer, schnapps and polka music (dancing is encouraged!), as well as artisan gifts and crafts.

Chicago's Christkindlmarket has become so popular in recent years that they've expanded to a second location in the suburb of Naperville, but our favorite will still always be the buzzing atmosphere of the Daley Plaza market in the heart of the city, complete with wooden chalets selling strudel, steins and souvenirs.

November 22nd - December 24th 2018

A whole month of fun and festivities can be found at the Baltimore Christmas Village, located next to the water at the Inner Harbor. Highlights include a 21-foot-tall Christmas tree, appearances from Santa and the Christkind and a competitive bratwurst-eating contest. Live performances, tasty treats and mulled wine are also on the menu.

November 23rd - 25th 2018

Spanning the three days of the Thanksgiving weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), the Leavenworth Christkindlmarkt celebrates Christmas in a truly Bavarian way. Stalls selling crafts, gifts and authentic German food can be found in the twinkling town center, along with a children's lantern parade and regular live music.

More than 60 stalls line the streets in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, with the vendors rotating each day to offer an amazing array of gifts and food stuffs that make perfect Christmas shopping fodder. The market specializes in jewellery, pottery and clothing, but there's also live music and some international foods on offer.

November 30th and December 1st 2018

Although this Christmas market only runs over two days, it has become the highlight of the local events calendar. There's both German and American food on offer, as well as craft beer, gluhwein, ornaments, gifts and plenty of live music and dancing. If you're lucky, you may also get a glimpse of the Christkind.

November 16th - 18th 2018

This year marks the 21st annual Christkindlmarkt in Cincinnati and, as it's run by the local Germania Society, you can guarantee an authentic German Christmas experience. The two days are filled with live music, delicious food (German, soups, pastries and cookies), beer, mulled wine and unique imported gifts.

December 13th - 15th 2018

You have to be quick to enjoy all of the fun of the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market as it only runs for two days each year. But during that time you can buy a range of unique handmade gifts, listen to German music, see a live nativity, chow down on schnitzel and goulash and even purchase a traditional German prune man.

December 1st - 2nd and December 8th - 9th 2018

With a backdrop of traditional alpine buildings, Alpine Helen really does pull out all the stops when it comes to celebrating Christmas. The town is decorated in twinkling lights, there's German food and music, as well as plenty of opportunities to pick up some specially-imported Christmas gifts.

Holidazzle offers a funfair-style atmosphere with its impressive light and fireworks displays, festive movie nights, ice skating rink and sing-a-longs, There's also plenty of local traders selling delicious warming food and drink, as well as gifts, clothing and jewellery.
