U.S. airlines have begun issuing travel waivers in anticipation of winter weather, which is expected to impact a large swath of the country through the weekend.
American Airlines and United Airlines are among those carriers allowing customers to rebook weekend travel to, from and through a plethora of East Coast destinations with no penalty ahead of heavy snow and potentially icy conditions that could disrupt travel.
American is waiving change fees for travel from Pennsylvania to Maine through Sunday, February 9, including major cities like Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Customers have until Sunday, February 9 to rebook their ticket and can travel by Wednesday, February 12.
United is also waiving change fees and fare differences for weekend travel along the East Coast, extending its advisory slightly further south to cities like Baltimore and Washington, DC.
United customers scheduled to fly into impacted cities Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9 are eligible to make changes with no penalty so long as they fly by Friday, February 14.
This latest weather system, named Winter Storm Garnett by The Weather Channel, is just one of four storms expected to impact travel across the Plains, Midwest and Northeast in the coming days.
Travelers should always check their flight status with their airline before arriving at the airport.
