While I'm always trying to save money, there are times when you just have to splurge. Our recent Delta flight from Atlanta to Munich was one of those times. Not only was the flight nice hours long, but our kids would be along, too.
Now, I'm not one to upgrade to business class. That's far too expensive for my tastes.
What I will do is pay around $100 per person to upgrade to Delta Comfort, a premium economy product that offers more leg room and roomier seats. After all, this particular Delta flight was overnight, landing in Munich right after 9:00 a.m.
I upgraded our family, using the annual travel credits from our old Citi Prestige cards to pay the $400+ charge.
To make things easier, I booked us 2+2 so both myself and my husband could manage and entertain one kid. (Full disclosure: I picked the little one because I thought she would probably sleep a lot, which she did.)
Delta Comfort promises a premium cabin experience with more room and more perks. As the Delta website notes, benefits include up to 4 extra inches of leg space, dedicated bin space, priority boarding, an amenity kit and a seatback screen with a wide selection of movies and HBO.

When it comes to leg space, I could absolutely tell the difference.
I'm not tall, but regular economy is occasionally uncomfortable. I would estimate we had 3-4 more inches of leg space than normal. This made it a lot easier to rest and get comfortable. Obviously, this was especially true for my husband, who is 6'3.
Was there really dedicated bin space? Um, no. We had half a dedicated bin available to us for four people because someone used our dedicated bin already.
Unfortunately, that meant we had to put our bags in someone else's dedicated bin space...and you see where this is going.
The entertainment was good but nothing special. While it was nice having a seatback screen with movies, everyone had one since this was a transatlantic flight. However, I did enjoy the amenity kit, which came with a little toothbrush, toothpaste and an eye cover. (My six-year old loved the tiny tube of toothpaste so much, she still has it.)
While the food doesn't really have anything to do with the Delta Comfort experience, I'll review it anyway.
In short, I thought it was okay but not great. (Then again, I'm not a big fan of plane food. Usually, I eat my dinner roll and call it good.) Yet, I do try to end up with something I like. Since I don't eat meat, I always order a meal ahead of time. For this particular trip, I decided to try "Asian Vegetarian" since I hoped it would be low-carb.
Well, it was and it wasn't. The main dish was a noodle dish with vegetables and tofu, and it was okay. I also got some kind of carrot salad, a dinner roll, a fruit cup and a block of cheese. All in all, it was a "meh" meal at best, gross at worst.
I ordered my kids each a "child" meal since I had no idea what they would get otherwise. Their meal was a little strange in my eyes, but my kids ate it, so, who am I to complain?
One got a dish of pasta that also came with chicken nuggets. Like I said, strange. She also received carrots and dip, crackers, a dinner roll and a chocolate dessert that I was quite jealous of.

Since this particular flight was an overnight, we basically boarded the plane, ate a snack and dinner, watched a movie and then tried to sleep.
Overall, the sleep component was a success. While we did wake up a few times for various reasons, both my husband and I slept a few hours at the very least. The kids probably got 4-5 hours as well, which was crucial since we planned to hit the ground running.
Overall, the flight got us where we needed to go with no frills but enough creature comforts to make it tolerable. I would fly a transatlantic Delta flight again, and I thought the Delta Comfort upgrade was money well spent.
