In accordance with its sustainability initiatives, Holland America Line has installed shore power capabilities on its entire 11-ship fleet, with Volendam connecting to shoreside on Sept. 27 in Vancouver.
“We have committed to reducing our carbon emission intensity 20 percent by 2030 from our 2019 baseline, and we’re on our way to reaching that goal through a variety of initiatives that include shore power,” said Holland America Line president Gus Antorcha.
“We look forward to more global ports embracing shore power capability in the future and are ready to work with them to connect.”
Holland America began the process converting its ships to shore power in 2006 on its four Vista Class vessels, which include Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam.
Pinnacle Class ships – Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam – were constructed with shore power technology while Signature Class ships – Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam – debuted with partial installation and are now shore-power ready.
“Shore power works by plugging the ship into a dockside source, and the power source enables the ship to run all electrical equipment on board without using the ship’s engines,” Holland America Line said, adding that it is now able to connect to shore power in upward of 18 ports global ports, “with more than 25 additional ports actively constructing shore power facilities or investigating the option to do so.”
