For those who haven't been, Pittsburgh is perhaps best known for its rivers, bridges and rabid sports fans. But any worthwhile trip to Steel City will alert travelers to the destination's stellar restaurant and bar scene.
Below are four Pittsburgh institutions that any visiting foodie must try.
Primanti Brothers
A sandwich from Primanti Brothers is the embodiment of Pittsburgh and no proper trip to Steel City is complete without a pit stop at one of the many locations throughout the city.
This Pittsburgh tradition dates back to the early 1930s and is iconic for the pile of French fries that come packed onto the sandwich. While you can probably pile on the fries anywhere else, we guarantee it won't taste the same.
Butcher and the Rye
Butcher and the Rye is beloved for both its cocktails and its meats. The bar is the first in Pittsburgh to have been a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bar Program and has been so for two consecutive years.
Order a whiskey flight from the bar's impressive collection and request the house made charcuterie to wake up your appetite.

Church Brew Works
Craft beer fans should move Church Brew Works to the top of their to-do and to-see list in Pittsburgh.
This brewery is located inside of an old church and features a pair of Great American Beer Festival bronze medal-winning drafts in the Celestial Gold and the Pius Monk Dunkel. Lamb meatballs and untraditional pierogies stand out on the pub menu.
While the beers will impress, the atmosphere alone makes it worth a visit.
Pittsburgh Popcorn Company
Regardless of whether you're craving popcorn, a visit to the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company will have your taste buds dancing in anticipation.
You'll be hard-pressed to run out of new flavors to try here. Start with the classic buttery movie style and work your way up to the chunky chocolate caramel. But be sure to ask what is the flavor of the week at either one of the eight locations throughout the city and its surrounding towns.
