Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that
the Maya Train will debut its inaugural route from Chiapas to Cancun on
December 15.
According to The
Cancun Sun, the 500-mile length of Maya Train will take passengers through
unique cities like Valladolid, Akumal and Puerto Morelos, as well as
archeological sites and environmental zones.
While the cost of riding the innovative transport system hasnt
been set, reports claim the price could be in the $50 price range, with
Mexican citizens expected to pay less than international tourists.?
The Chiapas-to-Cancun routes debut will occur during the
busy winter season in the Mexican Caribbean, providing the regions with an
alternative transportation source, which should alleviate the pressure on
current services, such as buses and taxis.
The Mexican President did reveal that Section 5 of the Maya
Train construction would be forced to delay its opening until next year due to
the complex nature of preserving the landscapes and the need to protect underwater
rivers and cenotes.
President Lopez Obrador also revealed that progress is being
made on purchasing
and delivering the freight trains and passenger convoys for the train
project.
In another major infrastructure project, the Mexican
government revealed in September that construction of the new Tulum
International Airport was about 65 percent completed and remains on track
for its scheduled opening in December.
