You cant just consider yourself a magical town, or Pueblo Magico, in Mexico.
You have to earn it.
Only the government can designate what is or isnt a magical town in Mexico based on rigorous criteria that include surrounding natural beauty and historical preservation.
As of this year, Mexico has 45 new towns on that list.
There is a sense of allure, and mystery, about the magical towns. And the government in Mexico has made them easier to get to and boost tourism. In fact, part of the criteria to be designated a magical town is that it must be located within 124 miles of an existing major tourist attraction, such as Cancun or the?ancient ruins.
The number of magical towns in Mexico now stands at 177 after the addition of the 45 new areas. That now includes the tourist attraction of Cozumel, one of four towns in the state of Quintana Roo that is now part of the list.
The town of Guerrero's Zihuatanejo, near tourist-heavy Ixtapa, is also part of the new additions.
The 45 new magical towns are:

- Guachochi, Chihuahua

- Jilotepec, State of Mexico
- Otumba, State of Mexico
- Ixcateopan de Cuauhtemoc, Guerrero
- Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
- Acaxochitlan, Hidalgo
- Meztitlan, Hidalgo
- ?Cocula, Jalisco
- Temacapulin, Jalisco
- Cotija, Michoacan
- Tlaltizapan de Zapata, Morelos
- ?Xochitepec, Morelos
- ?Ahuacatlan, Nayarit
- ?Amatlan de Canas, Nayarit
