Tourism to Germany is continuing to grow dramatically.
According to new statistics from the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), the Federal Statistical Office recorded 23.1 million international overnight stays in hotels with at least 10 beds from January to April of this year. That is a 4.8 percent increase from the same period of the previous year, the equivalent to more than 1 million more nights than in 2017.
"One million additional nights in four months-this is further proof of the successful positioning of Germany as a travel destination," said Petra Hedorfer, chairwoman of the board of the GNTB.
"Europe, the most important source region for German incoming, stands for stability with a solid growth of 3.6 percent. The Asian and American markets continue to grow at a rate of 6.5 and 8.2 percent respectively," explained Hedorfer.
The U.S. is one of the most crucial intercontinental source markets for the country.
It's not surprising that visits to Germany are on the rise. With the soaring popularity in river cruising, a rise in interest in adventure travel and the growing demand for culinary journeys, all of which Germany offers, it's no wonder that the country is front and center in travelers' minds.
It helps that Germany is more accessible than ever for American travelers.
An increase in air service continues to build between the U.S. and Germany, with Condor Airlines offering new service to Frankfurt from several destinations around the U.S., including Phoenix, New Orleans, San Diego and San Francisco.
Eurowings, one of Europe's fastest-growing airlines, also launched new service from New York City to Dusseldorf. The service operates six days per week, with the exception of Tuesdays.
For those planning travels farther out, Germany will take center stage in 2020 when Oberammergau's famous Passion Play begins its year-long run.
The once-a-decade performance has taken place every 10 years for more than 380 years and will premiere for its 42nd staging on May 16, 2020.
