Though the weather in Florida is still as humid as ever, fall is in the air at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Friday, August 17 marked the opening night of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, an annual celebration that takes place on select nights.
Many families might be wondering if the cost of the extra ticket to the party is worth it. As a mom of three little ones, I can say with confidence that there are so many additional details and experiences at the Halloween party that everyone from toddlers all the way up to adults will enjoy.
If you're considering checking out Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party with your family, here are 7 things I loved about the event, and I think you will, too.
Trick-Or-Treating
Of course, I'm going to lead with the candy. Dress up in your most creative costume and get ready to trick-or-treat in the happiest neighborhood on earth. You'll receive a bag for your sweet haul when you enter the park, but feel free to bring your own!
Kids with allergies can pick up special teal-colored bags for trick-or-treating and will receive teal-colored tokens instead of candy to redeem at allergy-free centers.
Children can go to any of the 14 locations handing out candy as many times as they want. This seemingly small detail will absolutely make your kid's entire Halloween.
More Characters
One of the highlights for young kids at Disney World is the character meet-and-greets. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party offers families a chance to meet rarely seen characters such as Jack Skellington and Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3.
I was delighted to see the Gravediggers dragging their shovels through Liberty Square. They were so entertaining, and a great photo opportunity that you won't get any other time of year in the parks.
Even classic characters like Minnie and Mickey will be dressed in special Halloween outfits. Wait times to meet characters are generally shorter during the Halloween Party, so pose away!
The Best Snacks
Leave it to Disney World to go all out when it comes to the themed food. Exclusive treats that stood out to me were the Not-So-Poison Apple Cupcake and the Jack Skellington Push Pops, both as pleasing to look at as they are to taste!
One of my favorite snack options at Disney is the souvenir popcorn tub. I wondered why the line for popcorn was so long before I realized that folks were after the Oogie Boogie Popcorn Bucket and the less rare Happy Halloween Popcorn Bucket.
Not-So-Scary Enhancements to Attractions
A few of the rides around Magic Kingdom are getting some special tweaks just for the Halloween Party. I really enjoyed the live pirates who interact with guests to warn them about a scoundrel who is after the same treasure as Captain Jack Sparrow. Gunpowder Pete will appear on the ride, so it's fun for kids to keep a lookout for him!
Other special Halloween touches include riding Space Mountain in complete darkness with a new cosmic soundtrack, and increasingly mad lighting and music on the Spinning Teacups rides.
Of course, all of these additions are still family-friendly and never too spooky for young children. It's all in good fun and adds that extra bit of Disney magic to some of your favorite classic attractions.
Dance Party
New to the Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this year is the Disney Junior Dance Jam! I love that Disney added this feature just for the little ones. Head on over to Storybook Circus to bust a move with characters like Doc McStuffins and Timon from the Lion Guard.
That's not the only dance party happening at Disney, though! Kids of all ages will love the beats coming from Tomorrowland at the Monstrous Scream-O-Ween Ball. Even I found myself nodding along to the music as I walked to and from Space Mountain.
Mickey's Boo-to-You Halloween Parade
The Boo-to-You parade is a chance to see how all of the Disney friends and villains alike celebrate Halloween. Many of the characters in this parade are exclusive to the event, and you won't find them any other time of year in the parks.
I really enjoyed the Haunted Mansion float, along with some of my favorite villains like Jafar and Maleficent closing out the parade. It's a can't-miss attraction at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which is why you can catch it at either 9:15 or 11:15.
Happy HalloWishes Fireworks
This was undoubtedly one of the highlights of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. As always, Disney does a marvelous job of choreographing the pyrotechnics perfectly with fan-favorite villains and spooky songs. Somehow the villains seem to come to life just through their voices over the loudspeaker and fireworks.
Just as with everything else at this special event, the fireworks were not too scary or spooky for kids. The whole family will love dancing along with songs like "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and "Never Smile At A Crocodile." The show starts at 10:15 and takes place between the two parades with just enough time to grab a snack in between.
A Can't-Miss Party
I was so enchanted by this family-friendly Halloween party, and encourage families to go if they're at all considering it. On top of everything I mentioned above, there are so many other small details that stand out like the Villains Mystery Pin Set for those who love trading pins, the Cadaver Dans Barbershop Quartet and the hauntingly fun Disney PhotoPass Magic Shots.
This is also the 25thanniversary of the movie Hocus Pocus, so Disney is celebrating with the Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular Show featuring the Sanderson Sisters, along with Hocus Pocus-themed t-shirts.
Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs through October 31st on select nights only from 7:00 p.m. - midnight.
