While inflation is still going strong across the globe, KAYAK’s Travel Check-In: Summer 2024 report, created using internal data from its travel search engine, found that travelers will be able to save on airfare this summer.?
The report found that domestic airfare prices are down 13 percent and international airfare is down 3 percent from the same time last year.?
Additionally, the report identifies the top-trending summer travel destinations, cheaper locales to visit and more.?
This year, holiday weekends are cheaper: domestic flights over Memorial Day Weekend are priced on average at $398, which is 16 percent less than it was last year. Meanwhile, international airfare dropped 3 percent from last summer, and August 12-25 is the cheapest time to fly internationally this summer. Domestic flights will see the biggest savings this year by region.?
Popular destinations include Africa, which has grown in popularity to be the second trending region on this list. Interest in destinations across Africa has grown 6 percent year over year, more than any other region. Interest in visiting Paris for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics is also skyrocketing: flight searches are up 26 percent, while hotel searches are up 180 percent.?
Other popular destinations travelers are planning to visit include London, Rome, Paris, Tokyo and Athens. The most popular domestic destinations are Seattle, Las Vegas, Orlando, Honolulu and New York City.?
Yet travelers can save some of their hard-earned cash and still travel internationally by visiting Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Central America this summer instead.
Domestically, the cheapest destinations to visit this summer by airfare price include Tampa, Minneapolis, Orlando, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale.?
“This summer’s trending destinations—places gaining more interest vs. last year—are ones we haven’t seen ‘pop’ in years past. From Africa earning the top trending region title to a notable increase in searches for hidden gem European cities like Tirana (Albania), Vienna (Austria) and Bucharest (Romania), the appetite for culturally diverse destinations is on the rise,” said Jake Bouvrie, KAYAK’s Chief Economist. “If you’re considering an international trip this summer—plan it for after July 4th to take advantage of lower airfares.”
