Throw in one of the most compelling historical stories, and you have a combination that helps Spain sit atop the global leaders in visitor numbers.?
As the 2024 travel season kicks into high gear this spring, I chatted with The Tourist Office of Spain in New York about the current state of travel in Spain, including some emerging trends and unique elements of the Spanish travel experience.?
Keep reading after the interview, as you will find more details on the topics discussed.?
Scott Hartbeck (SH):?Spain is one of the world's most visited countries, so as we look toward the 2024 travel season, which cities & regions are getting more popular and/or trending up?
The Tourist Office of Spain in New York (TOSNY): In 2023, Spain achieved a historic milestone, setting a record with over 3.8 million arrivals from the US alone, marking a remarkable increase of 17% compared to 2019, along with a 36% rise in tourism spending. The forecasts for 2024 are promising, with an estimate of surpassing 4 million arrivals from the US. This surge reflects Spain's enduring appeal as one of the world's premier travel destinations.
In 2024, we are seeing a continued surge in popularity for cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Tenerife. Madrid and Barcelona offer year-round direct connections from the United States, while Malaga, Palma, and Tenerife have direct flights from New York during the summer season.
Additionally, cities such as San Sebastian, Seville, and Valencia are trending upward among travelers. Regions like Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, the Balearic, and the Canary Islands are also seeing rising interest, each boasting unique cultural heritage, natural beauty, and distinct identities, making them ideal destinations for authentic experiences in Spain.

SH: When in Spain, travelers can stay the night in Paradores, which are refurbished historical buildings like castles, convents and palaces. This is a very unique concept and one that I feel isn't quite as well-known as it should be. Could you explain a little more about the Paradores and what travel advisors & travelers should know about them?
TOSNY: Paradores are indeed a hidden gem in Spain's accommodation offerings. They are historic buildings that have been converted into luxurious hotels, offering guests a unique and immersive experience in Spain's rich cultural heritage. Travel advisors and travelers should know that Paradores are scattered throughout Spain, often located in stunning natural landscapes or historic city centers. They offer top-notch amenities, exceptional service, and the opportunity to stay in some of Spain's most iconic landmarks.
SH: When many of us think of Spain, our minds immediately picture summer, but Spain is the absolute definition of a year-round destination. What would you say to someone who is considering booking a winter trip, but still needs just a little bit of convincing?
TOSNY: Spain truly is a year-round destination, and winter holds its own charm and allure. For those considering a winter trip, I would highlight Spain's mild climate, vibrant cultural scene, and diverse winter activities. From skiing in the Pyrenees to exploring charming Christmas markets, enjoying traditional winter cuisine, or experiencing the warmth of Spanish hospitality. Moreover, the Canary Islands are well-known as "the fortunate islands," an accurate description of their mild climate year-round, making them an ideal destination for those seeking sun-filled days and outdoor adventures amidst stunning landscapes. There's something for every traveler to enjoy during the winter months in Spain.
SH: Lastly, What is one final thing you think we should know about Spain in 2024 and beyond?
TOSNY: In 2024 and beyond, Spain continues to innovate and evolve as a premier travel destination. We are committed to sustainability, cultural preservation, and providing unforgettable experiences for travelers from around the world.
