Utopia. Heaven. Pure bliss.
It's what majority of travelers want on their dream vacation. You can find all that at Club Med Columbus Isle.
A paradise with more than just breathtaking views-though the beautiful blue ocean and white sandy beach is a key component in what makes this one of the best resorts in The Bahamas-the amazing staff, top-notch amenities and sensational food are what really move this tropical oasis to another level.
I had the pleasure of recently taking in the Club Med all-inclusive experience, and if you're considering a visit to the Caribbean, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better destination than this one.
[CALLOUT]
Located on the small island of San Salvador in the Bahamas, Club Med Columbus Isle oozes luxury. It opened in 1992 but recently underwent multiple renovations to rooms, as well as the addition of a new upscale restaurant.
The name Columbus Isle is an ode to the history of San Salvador, as the island is where Christopher Columbus landed in 1492.
As the only resort on the island, and although there are well over 200 rooms, you will never feel crowded. Accommodations aren't jam-packed together like others in the Caribbean; They're spacious, have a colonial architectural style and either red, blue, yellow or green schemes, which makes for a quite the colorful scene.
The staff-known around the resort as Gentle Organizers, or G.O.'s-does a superb job making everyone feel like they're in a tight community. The chief of the village, Antonio Di Razza, was extremely friendly and could always be found chatting it up with guests or leading shows and events.
There is a different theme and dress code each night, and though you don't necessarily have to follow it, where's the fun in that?
You can download the Club Med app to follow along and help plan ahead of time for what events are on the schedule during your stay. Sunday night, everyone is encouraged to wear their Club Med 45 shirts while Monday night is the all-white night, with dinner and a show out by the pool.
Again, it's all about the community here.
However, the beach, while large, still has a very private feel to it. It almost doesn't seem real. I had to constantly remind myself that I, in fact, am not dreaming. I really am de-stressing in paradise.
And I wasn't the only one either. Caribbean travel expert and journalist Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon was on the trip with us and agreed: This Bahamas beach is superb.
"In a region known for its beaches, the Bahamas' shores are definitely in the top three," she said. "Best of all, although all Bahamian beaches are rightfully public, Club Med guests effectively have the sandy scallop all to themselves. Doesn't get much better than that!"
While not every room has an ocean view, they all have a furnished terrace or balcony for an additional place of tranquility. Whether you're in a deluxe room, a club room or one of the newly renovated bungalows like I was, they're all equipped with a comfortable bed, a spacious closet and a place to lounge.

Additionally, there are TV's in the rooms, but you're in the Bahamas, you should be unplugged and really have no need to turn the TV on at all!
Speaking of being unplugged, Club Med understands that in this day and age, not everyone can stay off the grid. Therefore, they've set up several Wi-Fi towers around the resort to ensure that guests have a great connection to check e-mails, post photos on Instagram, surf the web, etc.
My experience with the Wi-Fi was a bit inconsistent, however. The connection was slow at times in my room, though faster at the restaurants. Given that some resorts out there don't even have the option of a strong Wi-Fi outside of guest's rooms, I was pleased to be able to post content on my social media channels no matter where I was at.
That said, if you absolutely need a strong Wi-Fi connection for work, (or you just have zero patience for slow Internet), I'd recommend you upgrade to the premium Wi-Fi.
A place where my encounters were never inconsistent? The three different restaurant options as well as the three bars.
Christopher's, the main restaurant, is adjacent to the reception lobby and is presented as a plush buffet. It's open for all meals, though I would say the breakfast stole the show here. Endless amounts of bacon by the beach; what could be better?
Attached is The Grill, where you can place orders for various entrees to be made at lunch and dinner. (The Lobster dinner will, unfortunately, cost you extra here, though.)
Closest to the pool are the Azul Bar-which opens at 9:30 a.m. and is commonly referred to as the beach bar-and the Verve Bar, which is the resort's main bar, open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The former is the hot spot at night for the "Crazy Signs" dancing with the G.O.'s.
Then there is the newly renovated La Pinta Beach Lounge Restaurant, which opened on April 1.
What was once two different restaurants has been transformed into a lavish restaurant and lounge space complete with a swank bar and sensational views of the turquoise water. It's stocked with house wine, beer and liquor, but you'll pay extra for the premium wines or the top-shelf liquor.
La Pinta is open for a late breakfast, has a rotating lunch menu and then a more sophisticated dinner that you'll need to set a reservation for. The dinner features a tapas-style menu, and you can't go wrong with anything on it. The mahi-mahi, fried calamari, paella and risotto were all tremendous.
Pick 2-3 items to share with those at your table, or indulge yourself like we did and try one of everything. After all, you are on your dream vacation, so why not dine like royalty and stuff yourself silly?
You can easily work those calories off at any one of Columbus Isle's sports activities.
Whether it's taking part in a fitness class at the gym, playing tennis, beach volleyball, basketball or water sports, there are so many ways to stay active. The water sports include scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking and kitesurfing. In the summer months, beginning May 1, Columbus Isle also offers water skiing and wake boarding.

Water sports are a central experience here, particularly scuba diving. I took part in the Discover Scuba Dive program, where we spent the morning learning the basics in the classroom and pool before boarding the afternoon dive boat, following our dive master David to see the Christopher Columbus anchor on the ocean floor around 40 feet deep. We also saw several types of fish and some reef sharks.
The more experienced divers went over 100 feet deep and saw a hammerhead shark and sea turtles.
And if you want to really go all out, pamper yourself at the Club Med Spa by L'OCCITANE.
It's not included in the all-inclusive package, but if the beach isn't enough relaxation for you, I recommend you splurge on a massage. If you've never had one before, take my word for it when I tell you that it is truly life-changing. I walked out of there feeling spa-drunk and incredibly rejuvenated. My masseuse told me she achieved her goal because I looked "like a zombie!"
Furthermore, Columbus Isle also offers various tours all over San Salvador island. The off-property excursions allow guests to explore the culture and history of the island by walking the steps of Christopher Columbus, as well as a Lagoon Tour around the island with a Lobster picnic, where you'll enjoy a private lobster meal and unbelievable views.
As for prices, it all varies depending on the room you pick as well as what time of year you plan to stay. The resort is only open from November to August, closing during hurricane season for safety and routine maintenance.
For adults in the summer, the prices range from $1,399 to $1,735, with the higher end belong to the rooms with the ocean view. In the winter months, adult prices range from $1,439 to $1,796. Per Columbus Isle, starting prices are per person, per 7-night all-inclusive air package and include a round-trip flight from Miami, airport transfers to and from the resort and your stay at the resort.
Compared to other places in the Caribbean, Greaves-Gabbadon said, "I'd consider the starting rate of roughly $1,400 all-inclusive for seven nights-including air!-to be a really good value. I'd spend my own money to vacation there, and that's always the test for me!"
So, skip the crowds of Nassau and have an unforgettable experience in the colorful paradise at Club Med Columbus Isle in San Salvador, Bahamas.
