The Plaza Hotel has been a New York City icon for more than a century and has served as the residence for some important historical figures. It's also a can't-miss Manhattan landmark that's starred in dozens of movies.
Now, you can join the elite list of property owners at The Plaza.
According to Elle Decor, one of the hotel's most-coveted suites is for sale. Keep in mind the famed Astor Suite, which has hosted the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and president John F. Kennedy, will set you back $39.5 million.
In defense of that price, the 4,284-square-foot suite recently underwent a two-year renovation led by designer Steven Gambrel. Overlooking Central Park and Fifth Avenue on arguably the best corner of the hotel, the suite boasts a trio of bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, hand-drawn plaster ceilings and a plethora of Old World relics.
Other notable highlights include hand-hammered leather walls from France, antique fireplace mantles, an HVAC system and humidifier designed to protect the valuable artwork inside and smart home automation from Savant that allows residents to adjust temperature and lighting inside the suite as well as control their television and music from their iPad.
The suite is currently owned by Esprit founder and former CEO Jurgen Friedrich, according to Elle Decor. Friedrich paid $25 million for the residence a decade ago.
Although there's little not to love outside of the enormous price tag, Friedrich has struggled for years to find a buyer. Originally listed at $55 million in 2008, he eventually dropped the price to $38 million before taking it off the market in 2009.

The suite was put on the rental market in 2011 but is now once again available for sale with Friedrich having moved out for good.
If the Astor Suite isn't in your price range (don't worry, we understand), The Plaza is still home to a slew of legendary suites that guests can book for a temporary and much more affordable stay, including the Fitzgerald Suite and the Tower Room. The hotel began converting many of its spaces into private condos for purchase during the mid-2000s.
