An American Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency
landing in Rome after the flight reportedly received a bomb threat, which the
carrier called a possible security issue.
According to NBCNews.com,
American Flight 292 was en route from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New
York City to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, when the
incident occurred.
American officials reportedly received a bomb threat by
email, and upon being informed, airport authorities in New Delhi said the plan
would need to be checked out before landing in India.
Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our
customers for their understanding, an American Airlines spokesperson said.
As a result, Italian Air Force fighter jets were tasked with
intercepting the plane and escorting it to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino
Airport. The aircraft landed safely at the Italian facility, with all 199
passengers and 15 crew members being reported as unharmed.
The passengers and crew members were bussed to the terminal
for screening, while the plane was screened by police officials, who determined
there was no credible threat.
