A shooting at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) caused a partial shutdown of the airport and led to a police standoff in which the perpetrator was shot and killed this morning, April 24.?
The New York Times reported the news, noting that officers from Peel Regional Police, which guards the airport, were called to respond to a 30-year-old man in visible distress who was sitting inside an S.U.V. at the departures area of Terminal 1 at around 7:00 a.m.?
The man pulled out a gun in police presence, and three police shot him. He was taken to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, an investigation has begun after the incident, with six investigators and three forensic investigators on the case. If anyone has information about the incident, they are encouraged to contact the SIU. The SIU investigates deaths and other crimes involving law enforcement.?
There were no other reported injuries, though the airport has noted that due to the police investigation outside Terminal 1, travelers are being rerouted to enter and exit through the Terminal 1 arrivals area.
There may be some delays due to the incident, though FlightAware is only reporting 42 delays at YYZ. Travelers heading to the airport today should allow for some extra time to navigate their entry into the airport due to the ongoing investigation.?
