Avalon Waterways has selected American actress and comedian Cheri Oteri to be the godmother of its newest ship, Avalon Alegria. The vessel will sail Portugals Douro River when it debuts next year.
Oteri is best known for performing on Saturday Night Live, NBCs hit late-night comedy show thats been running since 1975. Oteri was a cast member for five seasons starting in 1995.
The actress will christen Avalon Alegria in March 2024 at a ceremony in Pinh?o, Portugal.
Taking a river cruise with a constant scenic view of rich landscapes and picturesque villages is the best way to vacation I could ever imagine, says Oteri. I can't wait to sightsee with my fellow passengers in different ports while appreciating the spectacular waterways that help support the surrounding ecosystem we all get to enjoy. The beauty of this boat and everything it offers will make the best memories.
The ships name means happiness in Portuguese. So, when the river cruise lines executives began brainstorming a godmother for the ship, they thought about who might best fit with that sentimentand decided Oteri was the perfect choice.
"As a difference-making entertainerand one of the ground-breaking women who inspired modern comedy in AmericaMs. Oteri has brought so much inspiration and joy into our lives, says Pam Hoffee, Avalon Waterways president.?
Avalon is building the ship to sail exclusively on the Douro. The new 262-foot vessel will accommodate up to 102 passengers in 37 suites and 14 staterooms. It will also feature the companys signature open-air balcony design, which features floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall glass doors. As with other Avalon ships, Alegrias beds will face the window, giving cruisers a clear view of the scenery passing by outside.
"We've waited a long time for the perfect opportunity to add Portugal to our robust vacation portfolio and that day has nearly arrived," says Hoffee.
The vessel will sail one itinerary when it launches next year, called Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages Along the Douro. The 8-day sailing departs from and ends in Porto, making stops in Entre os Rios, Peso De Regua, Pocinho, Barca DAlva and Caldas de Aregos along the way. Each day of the cruise, guests will be able to choose from three types of excursions: classic, active and discovery.
Several of Alegrias 2024 sailingsand at least one 2025 cruiseare already sold out. But those travelers lucky enough to nab a spot will be able to explore the sheer splendor and cinematic scenery of the Douro Valley, says Hoffee.
