Few destinations in the world can lay claim to the history, the culture, and the sheer beauty of Puebla de los ?ngeles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the capital of its homonymous state. The city and its attractions are about as #instaworthy as they come and an excellent choice for couples looking for love in off-the-beaten-path places.
Though located an easy two-hour drive from Mexico City and its uber-connected international airport, Puebla has a very different feel. More relaxed than its hyper neighbor, its historical centro (downtown) is pedestrian friendly and a great place to walk hand-in-hand while admiring its exquisite and very ornate architecture.
Must-sees (whether you're religious or not) include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Capilla del Rosario in Santo Domingo Church.
The centro's large city square, or zcalo, is flanked by colonnades that are home to outdoor cafs serving the delicious local poblano cuisine, one of Mexico's finest. Food, by the way, is a very romantic addition to any trip to Puebla. In Mexico, "el amor entra por la cocina"-basically, the way to the heart is through the stomach-and there are dozens of outfitters and accommodations that offer cooking classes, an ideal souvenir that can be duplicated at home aprs honeymoon.
One of the best-known cooking schools is located in one of Puebla's many excellent boutique hotels, Sacrista de la Compa?a, making a stay here a win-win for #instalove and #instagourmet. This lovely gem is emblematic of Puebla's range of accommodations: small, independently owned and beautifully restored.
There are a few well-known brands, including the Rosewood Puebla, which opened its doors in 2017. Set in four historic buildings, it seamlessly blends the old and new, and is, in fact, one of the city's most sought-after wedding venues.
While in Puebla with your love, don't miss:
-A magical ride in the giant Estrella de Puebla Ferris wheel, the tallest of its kind in Latin America, for spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes and lush greenery. Whatever you do, do NOT forget your camera!
-A day trip to the neighboring town of Cholula on a double-decker bus-the guide will give you an insider's perspective of the town's history and take you to the Great Pyramid (four times larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, though it's still hidden underground). The Nuestra Se?ora de los Remedios church is built right on top, a beautiful example of Baroque and Neoclassical design.
Hot tip: Take an early morning tour to get the best views of the city and the volcanoes.
-Shopping for Talavera in one of the many specialty shops. This beautiful pottery is fashioned into myriad articles from kitchenware to dishes, flowerpots, sinks, tiles, and religious items, among others (yes, they ship to the US!)
Hot tip: there are only nine workshops in town certified by the regulatory agency to sell original Talavera, so look for the seal of approval from the Consejo Regulador de la Talavera.
