Hurtigruten's ambition is to be the most sustainable travel operator in the world, something the cruise line sees as necessary and bold, and the cruise line is pushing the industrys boundaries with many sustainable initiatives.?
In its 2022 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, the cruise line highlights its achievements when it comes to sustainability.
Hurtigruten decreased its absolute emissions by 2 percent in 2022, and added one new hybrid ship. The cruise line noted that 60 percent of its clientele joined citizen science studies, up 300 percent from previous years.
In addition, Hurtigruten added more green stay cabin nights than in 2021, an increase of 24 percent. Donations to sustainabile initiatives also rose 55 percent to 180,000 euros.?
Hurtigruten increased its female senior leadership numbers by 9 percent, and the cruise line doubled the amount of money it spends on local food and beverage.?
In addition, guests of Hurtigruten's collected 2,350 kiligrams of litter during beach cleanups, and reduced food waste by 341 grams per guest. The cruise line spent 66 million euros on reducing emissions, which was a direct investment in upgrading the fleet and R&D.?
Daniel Skjeldam, CEO of Hurtigruten, noted that he believes its critical to take stock of how the company is contributing to a sustainable future in order to continue to improve and meet its goals.?
"We are not boasting about our achievements C far from it," wrote Skjeldam in teh beginning of the prostpectus. "We are taking a critical look at our work, asking ourselves where we can improve and taking pride in the places where we moved forward. We want others in our sector to be inspired and follow our lead. Many of the problems we face are so big we only have a chance to be effective if we all work together. We must cooperate, and we must be open and transparent about it."
