Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers once sang “The waiting is the hardest part” – and boy was he right.
Patience certainly is a virtue, but it sure can be difficult when forced to wait things out, especially when it comes to travel.
There I was, sitting in my seat watching the time tick by, knowing we’re not going to leave at our scheduled departure time. All I wanted was for us to take off so I could get back home. Half an hour goes by, and I vent my frustrations in text messages to my wife as I grow hotter and begin to feel trapped on this plane.
After an hour of sitting without any movement, the pilot finally gives us the update we’ve desperately been waiting to hear. We were waiting on the maintenance guy, but everything’s all clear for take-off.
I rejoice for a moment but then reality checks in as I realize how fortunate I truly am. Being stuck for an hour is nothing. There are people who won’t be flying at all today in airports around the world, people who will be forced to find alternatives and some who will have to alter all their plans.
Delays and cancellations are the hard parts of travel. Nothing about it is enjoyable.?
When it happens, keeping a level head is key…but of course, that is easier said than done.
I try to remember that the waiting game works in a myriad of ways. How different do we feel about waiting for our travel trips to start? We’re counting down the weeks and days leading up to departure. That excitement, that anticipation, that joy that comes with waiting for it all to begin...it really is all about your mindset.?
We’re always waiting for something in our daily lives. When the waiting becomes a struggle, always remember that there is a strong likelihood that things could be worse.
How do you handle the waiting?
