November marks the start of the holiday travel season, which means more people than ever will be taking to the roads and skies during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

With so many people ready to visit friends and family for the holidays, travelers need to be aware of quarantine mandates and requisite public hygiene measures that vary depending on the area.

Whether it's 14-day quarantines or showing proof of valid negative COVID-19 tests, tourists need to understand the intricacies of each region's requirements before business or leisure travel.

All non-residents must arrive with a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours before departure or pay $250 to take a test upon arrival.

Out-of-state visitors spending more than a week in Alaska are also requested to take an optional second test between five and 14 days after their arrival.

Arriving travelers into Alaska are also now required to social distance for five days.

As part of a partnership between the states, anyone traveling to the region from an area boasting a new daily positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents or a state with a 10 percent or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average is directed to self-quarantine for 14 days from the last contact within the identified state.

There are currently 42 states and jurisdictions impacted by the three-state travel advisory.

In October, Hawaii launched a pre-travel testing program that allows interstate visitors to bypass the 14-day quarantine by providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of their arrival.

The state is only accepting the results of a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) performed by one of the trusted testing partners approved by the Hawaii Department of Health. Visitors must upload test results to the state's online Safe Travels form and complete a health questionnaire within 24 hours of departure.

Once in Hawaii, the Big Island also requires a second rapid test to be taken by all passengers upon arrival, while Maui and Kauai are also offering optional secondary testing for visitors.

While there are no statewide restrictions currently in place for Illinois, Chicago issued an Emergency Travel Order that requires a 14-day quarantine for both visitors and returning residents who come from 32 areas experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 cases.

Kansas is requiring residents and visitors to quarantine for 14 days if they have:

-Traveled to or from North Dakota on or after October 21

-Traveled to or from the country of Andorra on or after October 21

-Attended/traveled to mass gathering events out-of-state of 500 people or greater where individuals do not socially distance (6 feet) and wear masks.

-Been on a cruise ship or river cruise on or after March 15

Maine will now allow adults who receive a negative COVID-19 test from a specimen taken no longer than 72 hours before arrival to forgo the 14-day quarantine. Travelers from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are exempt from the testing and 14-day quarantine requirement for travel and lodging.

Travelers from the eight COVID-19 lower-risk states and districts must not fill out the Massachusetts Travel Form and do not need to quarantine.

All individuals entering Massachusetts must quarantine for 14 days unless they show proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken no longer than 72 hours before your arrival.

The two-week self-quarantine has been lifted for those traveling to New Hampshire from surrounding New England states-Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island.

Travelers heading to New Hampshire from non-New England states for an extended period of time are still asked to self-quarantine for a two-week period.

New Mexico is requiring travelers from states considered high-risk to self-quarantine for 14 days following their arrival or the duration of their stay, whichever is shorter. Low-risk states include only Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that anyone traveling to New York from out of state must show proof of a negative test taken within three days of arrival, quarantine for three more days and get a new COVID-19 test on the fourth day.

Anyone who declines to be tested must quarantine for 14 days, but those who commute to New York between bordering states are not required to be tested each trip.

Travelers entering Ohio from states reporting positive testing rates of 15 percent or higher based on a seven-day rolling average are advised to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

Pennsylvania recommends that anyone visiting or returning from 31 states with high incidences of COVID-19 quarantine for 14 days upon entering.

Most out-of-state visitors to Vermont will need to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. The state is allowing travelers from any country with less than 400 active cases of COVID-19 per one million residents to enter without quarantining. An online map of Northeastern and New England states, updated every Tuesday, identifies those counties subject to quarantine and those that are exempt.

Non-Vermont residents traveling in a personal vehicle are allowed to complete their 14-day quarantine in their home state, or complete a seven-day quarantine in their home state and obtain negative test results in order to enter Vermont without restrictions. Those arriving by air, train or bus, or from further than a direct car ride, must complete a 14-day quarantine upon arrival or undergo a seven-day quarantine, followed by a negative test taken at their quarantine location in Vermont.

A self-quarantine of 14 days is required after participating in non-essential travel to and from high-risk areas when returning or traveling to the district. The list currently includes 39 states.
