From buffets to room service, food waste is a major challenge for the cruise industry.
But Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Sun Princess, is equipped with special machines that help tackle this problem.
When the new ship finally debuted late last month, it did so with 26 food waste “biodigesters” onboard. The machines come from Power Knot Ocean, a company that specializes in organic waste management solutions.?
Using natural aerobic digestion, the machines break down food waste and turn it into water. From there, a pump sends the water to the ship’s on-board treatment facility.
This means the cruise line doesn’t have to spend as much time or money sending the ship’s food waste to a landfill, where it would release heat-trapping methane into the atmosphere.?
"The installation of our LFC biodigesters and WEP effluent pumps on the Sun Princess exemplifies our dedication to sustainable waste management solutions,” says Iain Milnes, president of Power Knot. “By seamlessly integrating our advanced technology into the ship's operations, we are contributing to a cleaner, greener future for the cruise industry."
