A battle among residents who would like to expand the skyline of one of the most idyllic and iconic vacation spots in the world could change tourism forever.Naturally, those who endorse change and expansion of the skyline in Waikiki, Hawaii are facing are facing backlash from critics.Hilton Hawaiian Village, the largest resort in Waikiki, is leading the expansion plans.A proposed 36-story, 515-room resort is sparking the debate. Opponents argue that it will exacerbate already challenging congestion. According to Hilton, new guest rooms have not been added for nearly 25 years. The project is only in the discussion stages right now.Its a touchy subject, no doubt.Waikiki has been mega famous for almost seven decades, ever since Elvis Presley made his Blue Hawaii film.The Honolulu City Council will decide whether to approve the project. Construction could begin as early as mid-2026. There will be numerous public hearings between now and then.Waikikis skyline and visitor experience are up for discussion.Waikiki has tried noise pollution reduction efforts in the past.
This is not the only development project doing on in Hawaii. One major recent announcement could impact Oahu if the $2 billion project to bring a new Atlantis resort is approved.?
