Bursting with ancient mysteries and rugged Andean culture, the Inca Trail is an unforgettable hike to experience in Peru.
Once the main passageway for the Inca to enter Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail is popular among tourists who wish to explore the secrets left behind by this thriving civilization.?
Whilst Machu Picchu remains the star attraction, there are other ruins like Wi?ay Wayna which can only be seen when hiking this sacred trail. Overlooking the Urubamba River, this formidable citadel was important for growing crops such as quinoa and potatoes.

What makes the Inca Trail truly special though is its blend of stunning scenery and mysterious cultures. Along the path youll pass through multiple ecosystems, where you can spot animals such as wild Llamas, elusive Spectacled Bears as well as the iconic Cock-of-the-rock.
Here you will also see untouched stone paths, mountain-carved tunnels as well as ancient storehouses built upon steep Andean precipices.
Unfortunately, though, there are challenges in preserving the Inca Trails legacy and native communities. Exploitation of local workers here has been an issue for various decades, however certain local companies are starting to change this.?

One of these is AB Expeditions, who operate hikes and trips throughout the Cusco region. Owners Abel Quillahuaman and Elsa Turpo once worked as porters on the Inca Trail, where they themselves earnt small wages and had to carry immense loads.?
Now they are doing their part to increase minimum wages for local workers with various social projects. This includes operating their own culturally-immersive tours, which give tourists the most complete experience hiking along the Inca Trail.
Learn more about their 4 Day Inca Trail Trek, where you will see incredible ruins whilst also helping to improve standards for local communities.
