Happy Earth Day! This is a day that is less about celebration and more about awareness.
Planes, trains, automobiles and cruise ships are not the only ones under scrutiny on Earth Day. What do we do about our aging cities, like Rome, which is almost 3,000 years old?
I suppose there’s something of a domino effect in play here, as the issues of climate change and emissions are all connected. There’s something to be said about that, but right now, the recognition of Earth Day presents a problem.
And it’s a conundrum.?
The study, compiled by the experts at Prime Casino, put together a list of iconic cities under threat from climate change. They then delved into the data, examining each city’s age and the proportion of museums, art galleries, sacred and religious sites, architectural buildings, and landmarks in each location.
The oldest cities, starting with Rome at 2,778 years, include Catania, Italy; Istanbul, Turkey; Alexandria, Egypt; Valencia, Spain; London, England; Muscat, Oman; Venice, Italy; Malé, Maldives; and Shanghai, China.
The conundrum is you don’t just rebuild landmarks. They are historical landmarks for a reason, primarily because of age. Forgive me, for instance, but I will never look at the cathedral of Notre Dame in France the same again. The fire several years ago was a tragedy, but it has undoubtedly been modernized in the rebuild. It’s not the same.
Others will take a different view; that’s just one man’s opinion.?
You can’t just rebuild the Roman Colosseum and pass it off as a landmark.
Surely, there are more learned people than I, such as architects, engineers, and meteorologists, who can offer their opinions and help solve the issue. Intricacy without intrusion. We aren’t talking about a baseball or football stadium here, where a new facility with a new name replaces an old one, and the old one suddenly fades away.
You can’t replace history. This isn’t a crusade, but it is a call to action. Especially if you want to walk where gladiators once walked. Earth Day isn’t just about sustainability in transportation; it’s for all of travel.
